Currently on view in the windows at the ICP Library and Museum Bookstore, are a variety of books by Sopa Americana, a collective of New York based artists, who will be showing their unique books during the MASQUILIBROS Art Book Fair, in Madrid. The MASQUELIBROS Artist Book Fair was created to offer artists, galleries and publishers of Artists Books an intimate and carefully organized environment to show their artworks.
In the first two editions of MASQUELIBROS, 2012 and 2013, the results exceeded all expectations. For our third edition, June 6-8, 2014, we return to one of the most important places in the center of Madrid: COAM – The Official Institute of Architects of Madrid. This year’s fair includes numerous activities: workshops, conferences, round tables, exhibitions, and installations. It is an opportunity to share recent areas of creation and investigation between artists, publishers, gallerists, educators and academics, collectors and the general public. The organizers are all volunteers and there is no entrance fee for the fair. The stands are economically priced to cover the costs of the venue rental and catalogs.
The principal goal of the Espora Project is to promote the creation and production of artists’ books and to disseminate the idea of the “book” as a medium of artistic expression. In 2012 the Espora Project was initiated to introduce Artist Books to a larger public and promote the fair around Madrid. Part of the parallel activities, leading up to the fair, MASQUELIBROS disseminates Artist Books throughout Madrid, and other Spanish cities: Barcelona, Seville, Oviedo, Vigo, Zaragoza, and Orense. Internationally, the Espora Project has counted on the participation of institutions and locations in Mexico and Ecuador, expanding to a new public with exhibitions in variety of venues, from University galleries to bodegas and butcher shops.
This year the Espora Project is presenting books from the collective, Sopa Americana at the ICP Library and Bookstore, featuring work by: Saul Robbins, Alexis Duque, Gina Fuentes, Norma Márquez Orozco, Kae Newcomb, Claudia Ospina, Lisa Parra, Freya Powell & Lex Braes, Lina Puerta, Risa Schneider, and Traci Talasco. In Madrid, the Espora Project counts on the participation of the Museum Cerralbo, The Museum of Natural Sciences, The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, The Thyssen Museum, The National Museum of Romanticismo, The Museum of Decorative Arts, The National Library, Caixa Forum and the Cervantes Institute.
