Memories of Hiroshima & Nagasaki

Books that are meditations on the atomic bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima seem timelier than ever these days.

Coincidentally, ICP has a forthcoming exhibition, Hiroshima Ground Zero 1945, which has a book in production now at Steidl.

There are a number of great books in our library which endeavor to come to terms with this horrific event and its aftermath.

Some of them are considered part of the canon of the most prized photography books – Hiroshima by Domon Ken and Chizu [The Map] by Kawada Kikuji have both been cited as important works in both Andrew Roth’s and Martin Parr’s books of photography books, and here of some of the works we noticed in the library:

Domon, Ken. Hiroshima. [Tokyo] : Kenko-Sha, 1958. TR820.6 .D65 1958
Hosoe, Eikoh. Return to Hiroshima. New York, Atheneum, 1970. TR820.5 H67 1970
Ishiuchi, Miyako. Hiroshima Yokosuka : Ishiuchi Miyako ten. Tokyo : Megurokubijutsukan, 2008. TR647 .I842 2008
Ishiuchi, Miyako. Hiroshima. Tokyo : Shueisha, 2008. TR179.5 . I84 2008
Sasaki, Yuichiro. Hiroshima no nikki = Diary of Hiroshima : Scens [sic] of an A-bomb city. Hiroshima : Sande Kamera, 1969. TR647 . S27 1969

Everyone at ICP is wishing that their friends and alumni in Japan are all safe and sound.
