Each day brings us new photographs of Cairo.  ICP Library has a wonderful artist book that is quite a departure from what we are seeing, and quite wonderful too.

Cairo 7/15 – 7/30/2006 by Yvon Chabrowski was donated to us by the artist.  It is one of an edition of 10, so resides in the rare book cupboard.

The book was produced when Ms. Chabrowski was a student of the Hochschule fur Grafik und Buchkunstvisit in Leipzig, on a 2 week trip to Cairo, part of an exchange project between the Academy of Visual Arts (Hochschule fur Grafik und Buchkunst/HGB), Leipzig and the Arts Universities Helwan University, Cairo/Egypt, Lebanese University, Tripoli/Lebanon and Damascus University, Damascus/Syria.

The pages are scanned plastic slide sleeves with portraits cut out from the Cairo daily newspapers, scanned on the front and the back.  Like the sea of faces in the current day photographs of Cairo, that we are told represent a wide range of socio-economic and political points of view out of their usual context, these faces have been removed from their newspaper context and identity.
